A bettor made nearly half a million dollars on the ouster of Nicolás Maduro immediately preceding it was publicly declared, raising questions about the possibility of profiting from confidential information of the US operation.

Changing Odds in Wagers

Wagers on Polymarket, an online prediction market, that the leader would be no longer in control by the month's conclusion surged in the time leading up to President Donald Trump stated on January 3rd that the president had been taken into custody.

A particular user, which joined the platform in December and took four positions, all on political events in Venezuela, made more than $436K from a initial bet of over $32,000.

It remains unclear. The user had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Probability Spikes Before News Break

Platform data shows that traders assessed the probability of Maduro's exit at just a low 6.5 percent in the midday period of the Friday before the event.

Yet these probabilities had increased to over 10% by shortly before midnight and surged in the first hours of the next day, pointing to a sharp shift in betting activity immediately prior to the social media post was made.

"This particular bet has all the characteristics of a trade based on inside information," stated Dennis Kelleher.

A handful of other traders also earned tens of thousands of dollars from predicting the capture.

Legal Questions Emerges

Some lawmakers are starting to take note.

A new rule presented on the start of the week would prevent federal workers from placing bets on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a bet.

Market Background

Prediction markets have grown significantly in the United States, with traders able to wager on everything from sports outcomes to political events.

The industry faced scrutiny under the last presidential term. Yet it has found a more favorable environment during the current presidency.

Insider trading is a crime in the stock market, but there are less oversight in the prediction market arena.

An official representative for Kalshi said their site "has clear rules against insider trading of any form."
