Uche Sparks Comfortable Palace Win at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Despite embarking on their first-ever European adventure, Crystal Palace are learning at a rapid pace. Without key figures like forward Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the London club departed Dublin with a comfortable win that all but guarantees them a place in the Conference League qualifying rounds.
Another three points in their upcoming match against Finnish KuPS should be enough to seal straight passage to the knockout stages, particularly after a previous stumble against Strasbourg.
Squad Members Seize the Opportunity
This occasion offered a chance for some of Palace's lesser-used talent to shine. Christantus Uche, in only his second beginning since arriving on loan from Getafe, opened the scoring with a clinical finish. Forward Eddie Nketiah contributed a second, finding the net for the second consecutive match.
The Shelbourne side that had finished their league season proved outmatched against a mostly rotated Palace outfit. The visitors were already weakened by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are out with knee problems.
Control Asserted from the Start
Despite heavy rain in Dublin, Palace rapidly established dominance. A slick passing sequence in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, allowed Nketiah to set up Uche for a straightforward finish.
Youngster Adam Wharton came close minutes later, fizzing a long-range effort over the bar. Nketiah then claimed for a penalty after bursting into the area, but the referee dismissed the protests.
The formerArsenal man didn't need to wait long to get his goal, prodding home from a yard out after Uche's effort had struck the post.
Shelbourne were hanging on desperately. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to avoid a booking for a couple of robust challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the woodwork with a header from a corner.
Yeremy Pino Seals the Contest
The match was effectively over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past a series of weak challenges before calmly dispatching a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
Following the break, coach Oliver Glasner took the chance to withdraw several players like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse came close to scoring his first touch, only to see his shot blocked.
Esse was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one attempt strike off both posts before being gathered on the line. Uche also blazed a sitter of a chance, indicating there is still scope for improvement in his game.
A solitary worry for Palace was a second-half knock to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This allowed 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to make his senior debut, rounding off an otherwise positive night for the visiting side.
