Micky van de Ven found the net on two occasions as Tottenham prolonged their unbeaten run in away games in the Premier League and delivered Everton their initial loss at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at the dockside location, having left Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven pounced on two occasions from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to put their strong form at jeopardy, and they were unable to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - nodded in a final goal to seal the victory.

The Everton defender believed he had equalized the tally five minutes after Van de Ven's first goal, directing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

Beto, meanwhile, failed to convert a number of opportunities, while Vicario made a series of fine saves to ensure Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the English top flight.

But the VAR stepped in, advising the match official to check the score on the screen and the referee ruled that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win elevates the manager's side into third place in the Premier League, a handful of points off north London rivals and table-toppers Arsenal.

Everton stay in 14th position and sit half a dozen points ahead of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven fulfils role at both ends of the field

Following a drab weekday display in the Champions League against the French side, where they mustered a mere attempts on target, Frank chose Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The summer signing was failed to make much of an impact before being replaced for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Centre-back Van de Ven converted into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with the midfielder heading the ball toward the face of goal for an unmarked the defender to head home.

And the captain - stepping up as captain in the Argentine's absence - notched his second in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to nod in.

The Dutchman was equally outstanding in defensive duties, partnering effectively with his defensive colleague as the duo handled excellently with the 34 crosses sent their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Everton lacking striker's instinct

The club's new home had been a fortress, but it seems the novelty may have worn off slightly and supporters headed to the gates after Sarr's final goal for Tottenham.

The break in the team's winning streak at home will not be a major concern for David Moyes, but their attacking woes will be.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Everton's two recognised centre-forwards - had scored just one league goal combined before the weekend's match.

And they were unable to add to that miserable record on a wet and gloomy night on Merseyside.

Beto's form was epitomized when he chose to overhead kick a clear chance from close range, despite having room and opportunity to reposition for a more conventional attempt that would have tested the keeper.

Barry, as well, was unable to make an impact after coming on for Beto in the second half.

It was not for a shortage of opportunity. Most of the home side's attacks came through Grealish and the forward, who tirelessly delivered dangerous balls into the Spurs penalty area.

The Toffees: The team head to the Stadium of Light in the Premier League on early November at 20:00 GMT.

Spurs: The London club travel to St James' Park on late October for their fourth-round Carabao Cup match against the Magpies.
